How to add instant search to your Shopify store

A theme’s built-in search usually matches the product title and little else. Shoppers who type a SKU, a material, or a slightly misspelled word get nothing. Instant search fixes that by building an index the app owns and querying it as the shopper types.

Why the default search falls short

Default Shopify search is keyword matching over a narrow set of fields. It does not forgive typos, does not know your synonyms, and cannot filter results the way a shopper expects. On a large catalog, that means lost sales from people who could not find what they wanted.
