Faceted filters that actually help shoppers buy
Aug 26, 2026 · 5 min read
Good filters turn a long results page into a short, relevant one. Bad filters show options that do nothing, or push the products off the screen. The difference is in which facets you expose and how you lay them out.
Choose facets shoppers actually use
Start with the attributes people shop by: size, color, price, material, brand. Expose those as facets and leave the rest. Every facet should change the results, or it is just noise.
Pick a layout that fits the page
- Sidebar: a column beside the grid, good for catalogs with many facets.
- Toolbar: dropdown buttons above the grid that float open, good for image-led stores.
- Drawer: a Filters button at every width, good on mobile-first stores.
- Always open: facets stacked above the grid when you want everything visible.
Keep counts honest
Show the product count beside each value, and compute those counts from the same query that draws the grid, so the number always matches what the shopper will see. AnotherDev Search and Filters does this in a single request.
